Greetings to all Nurses and Midwives across New Zealand!
May is the month annually when both professions are acknowledged for their contribution to the health of our community.
Midwives Day: We would like to acknowledge Midwives and their important work with women anticipating the birth of their child, providing expert care and attention to ensure a safe delivery and supporting new families establish their new unit. You make an important contribution to society and our future.
Nurses Day: The 12th of May is International Nurses Day. The diversity of nursing contribution is acknowledged across the whole spectrum of service delivery which has expanded in response to new technology and service delivery. we are impressed by the flexibility of nurses to work in a range of contexts in our country as we meet identified need, support people in times of vulnerability and adapt to new technologies to ensure safe and effective care. Thank you to Nurses across New Zealand for their contribution hard work and commitment.
International Nurses Day has two areas for reflection in 2010:
- It is 100 years since Florence Nightingale died. She was a Nurse of Influence across the world. We can be proud of her focus on caring, professionalism, social responsibility and using her role to influence politicians to improve care for vulnerable people. She was also skilled in epidemiology and using data / evidence to articulate recommendations.
- The International Council of Nursing has identified the theme for 2010, recognising Nurses Leading Chronic Care. In New Zealand we have many nurses skilled working with patients and communities to help them manage their health and lifestyle. We value and recognised the contribution these nurses make to the health status across New Zealand
