I am a USA citizen but I also have my resident visa in NZ.  I currently live back in the states.  I am enrolled in a phlebotomy course and internship that begins in March.  I was considering coming back to NZ to do a phlebotomy course but from my research NZ doesn't hold courses, is this correct?  If I came to NZ with a certification from the states, would I then certify through NZ so that I can apply and be accepted to work in a job? I

Kind Regards,

Alaina

Hey!
I am an assistant nurse and a phlebotomist in the U.K but would love to come over to nz and practice phlebotomy. Do you have any advice on how to go about it? I'm interested in coming to the South Island around June next year. Do I just wait till then and apply? Or do I have to do extra training courses to come over?
Thank you!

Hi Letitia

There are no specific requirements to work as a phlebotomist.
However, employers do value phlebotomists who are qualified and registered. Being qualified also means you can progress into a related job such as medical laboratory technician.
There are two pathways to becoming a qualified, registered phlebotomist – training on the job, or starting with a qualification.
If you train on the job you need to:
- work as a phlebotomist in an approved laboratory for two years
- pass the Qualified Medical Laboratory Technician (QMLT) exam.
For more information about approved qualifications go to: http://www.mscouncil.org.nz/qualifications
For information about the QMLT exam go to: http://www.nzimls.org.nz/qmlt-qsst-examination-application.html
