Great to hear from you. Because you have been away from nursing for ten years, your best bet is to contact the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Sometimes you can complete a Return to Nursing programme (and many DHBs run these) but because of the length of time away from nursing your best bet is contacting the council, as they will need to assess your situation.

There are a variety of RTP (return to practice programmes) some are through tertiary education providers and some are through DHBs or private providers- the best way to ascertain the ones based in your region would be to contact the Nursing Council of NZ to find out the nearest Competence Assessment Programme (CAP) for a NZ registered nurse to Return to Nursing.

The costs are widely variable, so it pays to look around. Most will be part time, so you can work and undertake the programme- most programmes take about 6 -12 weeks depending how long you have been out of practice.

We are unaware of any DHB that would pay fees in return for a job. It may be worthwhile contacting the offices of the Directors of Nursing or the HR departments from your local DHB, to see if they can offer you any current regional information or advice.
