House Officer FAQ's

The recruitment of second year House Officer (Post Graduate Year 2) and Senior House Officer (SHO) positions is managed individually by the 20 District Health Boards (DHBs) in New Zealand within the nationally agreed recruitment timeframes.

How do I apply for a House Officer position?

Each individual DHB has specific application requirements. For further information visit the Apply Now page.

Am I eligible to apply for a House Officer position?

All applicants must hold valid registration or be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). Check your eligibility ahead of making an application by visiting the MCNZ Self Assessment website.


What are the dates for the House Officer training year?

The House Officer training year for 2013/2014 commences on 25 November 2013 and finishes 23 November 2014. The training year is divided into four, three month runs.

I’m an overseas applicant, how do I apply for a Work Visa?


Work visas are issued by the New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS) and are usually obtained by applying to the NZ Embassy or Consulate closest to you.
If you have been offered a position and have accepted, you will need to complete an application form for NZIS and your prospective employer will issue you an employer's supplementary form to support your application.
